What Effects Workplace Morale?

Everything! From the policy on dress to the insurance coverage changes morale is effected. Morale is also effected by the weather and world events. So what can employers do to maintain great morale? Work to create an atmosphere where employees can flourish even when the elements are challenging.

According to Barb Wingfield, the Workplace Morale Specialist, “providing a forum for employees to receive communication and to also share their ideas can help to improve morale.” Wingfield shares that most misunderstandings are a result of poor communication. “Employers sometimes are so focused on accomplishing the goals of the business that they forget to “keep employees in the loop” and take time to listen to employees.

Wingfield suggests that employers ask themselves the following questions to see if they are good listeners. 1. Do you allow people to finish their sentences? 2. Do you make eye contact with the other person? 3. Do you ask questions for clarification? If you have answered yes to all three questions you are a great listener.

In Wingfield’s book, Retaining Your Employees, Using Respect Recognition and Rewards for Positive Results, she addresses the importance of communication and how it effects not only morale but also the bottom line.

Many things effect morale. Some we can control and others we can not. But, if you want to improve morale tomorrow, work on improving your communication methods, especially your listening skills.
