Employees are Quitting Bosses, Instead of Businesses!

Today’s employees don’t quit businesses, they quit the boss! Employees are more likely to become upset and turn in their resignation because of something that the boss did or did not do, rather than the actual work itself. Employees want to be treated and respected as human beings who are important and valued.

Barb Wingfield, President of Morale Builders, advises employers, “remember it is the little things that you do for employees that makes the difference.” Too often the little things are over looked as unimportant or we’ll get to them later attitude. Wingfield sites an example of where the employer failed to respond to the request for a pay raise for an award-winning employee. After the employee was ignored, he began to wonder if his hard work and dedication was appreciated. He soon took a new position at a competitors business.

In Wingfield’s book, Retaining your Employees Using Respect Recognition and Rewards for Positive Results, she addresses the important issue of making sure the little things in your work environment do not fall between the cracks.

Checklist for success:

  • Do you interact with employees on a regular basis or only when there is a problem?
  • Do you take the time to really listen to your employees?
  • Do you ask about their lives beyond the workplace?
